This Day in MLB History

On July 28, 1962, infielder Pumpsie Green (the first black player for the last team to integrate - Boston) returns to the Red Sox after mysteriously disappearing off the team bus two days ago in New York with teammate Gene Conley to use the pisser. Wonder what old Pumpsie was up to in that bathroom for two days?

On Deck - July 28, 2008

The baseball ignorant have had a field day dismissing the NL West. Phooey. This is the most riveting division in baseball. Sub .500 ball is the new 1927 Yankees. At least to these eyes. And this offers up two premiere matchups...First off, you've got the Arizona Diamondbacks (baseball's most meaningless team) battling the awesom Padres of San Diego. Greg Maddux will try to continue to blow away the competition this year, going for his first win in 15 starts. Meanwhile, the DBacks' Micah Owings, a much better hitter than pitcher, will show off his 5.40 ERA. Don't miss!...A little further north, the Dodgers and Giants renew their storied rivalry of mediocrity. With a victory Sunday, the Dodgers, who trail Arizona only by one game in the NL West, moved to .500 for the first time since the end of May. Hiroki Kuroda, with his impressive 5-7 record, will take the mound for the Dodgers, while the Giants' Kevin Correia (1-5, 5.71 ERA) looks for his first victory since the second week of the season. Plus, it's always fun to see how many times Andruw Jones will strike out. Doesn't get better than that!...If American League baseball is your perversion, the Mariners vs. the Rangers might be right up your alley. The two teams are a combined 35 and 1/2 games behind the AL West leading Los Angeles Angels. With game time temperatures expected to be in the low 100's, this is sure to be this week's hottest series...
